Infrared Sauna vs. Traditional Sauna: What’s the Difference?

9/28/2026

Picture
If you're considering sauna therapy, one of the first things you may notice is that not every sauna works the same way.

You've probably heard terms such as traditional sauna, dry sauna, infrared sauna, far infrared sauna, and full-spectrum infrared sauna.

So what's the difference—and

does it matter?

At Blissful Relaxation Float Spa in Louisville, Kentucky, we chose a Clearlight Sanctuary C full-spectrum infrared sauna for our private infrared sauna experience.

Here's what makes infrared sauna different from a traditional sauna and what you should know before trying one.

What Is a

Traditional Sauna?

Traditional saunas have been used for generations and generally work by heating the air inside the sauna.

As the temperature of the room increases, the hot air warms your body.

Traditional dry saunas can operate at relatively high air temperatures, which creates the intense heat most people associate with sitting in a sauna.

For some people, that intense environment is exactly what they enjoy.

But it isn't the only way to experience sauna.

What Is an Infrared Sauna?

An infrared sauna works differently.

Rather than relying primarily on extremely hot air to warm your body, an infrared sauna uses infrared wavelengths that transfer radiant energy to the body.

This allows infrared saunas to operate at lower air temperatures than many traditional saunas while still creating an intense warming experience.

For people who find extremely hot traditional sauna temperatures uncomfortable, infrared sauna can provide a very different experience.

What Does Full-Spectrum

Infrared Mean?

This is where infrared saunas can become confusing because not every infrared sauna uses the same technology.

Infrared is generally divided into three ranges:

Near infrared (NIR)

Mid infrared (MIR)

Far infrared (FIR)

A full-spectrum infrared sauna is designed to provide all three.

At Blissful Relaxation, our Clearlight Sanctuary C is a full-spectrum infrared sauna, which is one of the reasons we selected it when designing our facility.

We didn't want to simply check a box and say we had an infrared sauna.

We wanted premium equipment from a company known specifically for infrared sauna technology.

Infrared Sauna vs. Traditional

Sauna: The Biggest Difference

The easiest way to understand the difference is this:

A traditional sauna primarily heats the air around you.

An infrared sauna uses infrared energy to directly warm your body while also warming the surrounding environment.

Both create heat.

Both can make you sweat.

But they create that experience differently.

That's also why comparing an infrared sauna solely by its air temperature to a traditional sauna doesn't tell the whole story.

Why Do People Use Infrared Saunas?

People incorporate infrared sauna sessions into their wellness routines for many different reasons.

Some simply love the feeling of being warm and relaxing in a quiet environment.

Others use sauna as part of their fitness, recovery, or general wellness routines.

Common reasons people seek out sauna experiences include:

  • Relaxation
  • Sweating
  • Post-workout recovery
  • Taking time away from phones and daily distractions
  • Creating a regular wellness routine
  • Enjoying warmth without the extremely high air temperatures associated with some traditional saunas

Scientific research continues to examine sauna use and heat exposure in areas such as cardiovascular health, exercise recovery, circulation, and general wellness.

As with any wellness service, sauna isn't intended to diagnose, treat, or cure a medical condition, and anyone with health concerns should speak with their healthcare provider before beginning sauna use.
What Does an Infrared Sauna

Session Feel Like?

If you've only experienced a traditional sauna, your first infrared session may feel different.

Rather than immediately walking into extremely hot air, the warmth can feel more gradual.

As your session continues, you'll typically become increasingly warm and begin to sweat.

And unlike exercising, you aren't running, lifting weights, or doing anything strenuous.

You're simply sitting and relaxing.

For many people, that's one of the best parts of the experience.

You can put the phone away, sit back, and enjoy the warmth.

Why Does Sauna Equipment

Matter?

Just as float tanks aren't all the same, infrared saunas aren't all the same.

There are small portable infrared units, lower-powered residential saunas, commercial saunas, far-infrared-only systems, and premium full-spectrum systems.

When we built Blissful Relaxation, equipment quality mattered to us.

That's why we chose the Clearlight Sanctuary C.

Clearlight specializes in infrared sauna technology, and the Sanctuary C provides the full-spectrum infrared experience we wanted for our guests.

Our system is also 220 volts, rather than the 110-volt electrical systems commonly found in many smaller residential-style infrared saunas.

We believe details like these matter when you're comparing sauna experiences.

Why We Chose a Private Sauna

Experience

The sauna itself is only part of the experience.

We didn't want our infrared sauna to feel like sitting in a communal gym sauna or bathhouse surrounded by strangers.

At Blissful Relaxation, the experience is designed around privacy.

Your sauna is located inside its own private room.

That means this isn't a communal sauna experience. You can book the sauna for yourself and up to three of your friends to enjoy together. It's intimate and private not some kind of social club.

It's your space to relax.

Your Own Private Shower

One feature we especially wanted our sauna guests to have was convenient access to a shower.

Our infrared sauna room includes its own private in-room shower.

After spending your session warming up and sweating, you don't have to walk through a gym or shared locker room looking for somewhere to shower and refresh yourself for the rest of your busy day.

Your shower is right there in the room with you.

For us, that's part of what a premium private sauna experience should be.

Hydration Matters Too

Sauna sessions can cause significant sweating, so hydration is important.

That's why we've also included a water machine inside the sauna room for our guests.

We encourage guests to arrive hydrated and continue paying attention to hydration before and after their sauna session.

It's another small detail that becomes much more important when you're actually using the room.

Privacy vs. a Communal Gym

Sauna/Bathhouse

For many people, this may be one of the biggest differences between using an infrared sauna at Blissful Relaxation and using a sauna at a gym or other communal setting.

At a gym/bathhouse, you will be sharing the sauna with several people you don't know.

Doors open and close.

Your sauna session at Blissful Relaxation is different.

Our philosophy has always been that relaxation and wellness experiences should feel private and intentional.

You aren't sharing your sauna session with strangers.

You can simply relax.

What Should You Bring to an

Infrared Sauna Session?

You don't need much.

Most importantly, arrive well hydrated.

Because your sauna experience takes place in a private room, you can focus on getting comfortable rather than worrying about a crowded communal environment.

After your session, you'll have access to your private shower so you can be completely renewed before getting dressed and continuing with your day.

Our staff can also explain how everything works before your first session.
Infrared Sauna in Louisville,

Kentucky

Blissful Relaxation opened in Louisville in 2018 with a simple philosophy: if we're going to offer a wellness service, we want to provide it using premium equipment in an environment we'd want to use ourselves.

That philosophy is why we chose the Clearlight Sanctuary C full-spectrum infrared sauna.

It's also why we built the experience around privacy rather than a communal gym-style setup.

Our infrared sauna room combines:

Full-spectrum infrared

220V Clearlight Sanctuary C equipment

A completely private room

A private in-room shower

Convenient access to water

And an environment designed around relaxation.
